Counselling for Primary School Children

Children who have a good foundation for mental wellbeing develop coping skills that help them through life. When feelings and behaviours start to impact on you child’s everyday functioning and wellbeing, we can help get to the bottom of what is going on and guide you in the right direction.

Types of concerns

A range of behaviours can be observed as children grow and learn to manage their feelings, explore relationships and their surroundings, and test boundaries. Feelings such as worried, sad or angry are all normal feelings for children and adults to have sometimes and are only concerning if it is impacting on your child’s ability to engage in day to day life. Seeking the support of a psychologist may be helpful to explore any concerns further and to offer additional support if required.

At Psychology Melbourne we are passionate about early intervention for children with developmental, behavioural or learning difficulties. We aim to support children to develop the coping skills and positive behaviours that will enhance their engagement, relationships and functional outcomes.

Our psychologists can assist with a variety of presenting concerns, including:

  • Anxiety (e.g. phobias, social anxiety, separation anxiety, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, fear of failure)
  • Emotional difficulties (e.g. depression symptoms, difficulty regulating strong feelings)
  • Behavioural problems (e.g., hyperactivity and attention difficulties, oppositional behaviours, school refusal)
  • Learning and School related difficulties
  • Interpersonal and communication skills (e.g., social skills, assertiveness skills)
  • Adjustment to parent separation, or changes in the family structure
  • Bullying
  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Adaptive skills and everyday functioning
  • Grief and loss issues
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Childhood trauma
  • Health related concerns and management

Our approach

We assist children by helping them understand their experiences and by providing them with the skills and insights necessary to overcome their challenges and maximise their strengths. We emphasise the vital role of parents and caregivers and work with them to develop a shared understanding of the presenting concern and their child’s strengths and support needs. We also work with schools and other professionals involved in the child’s care to develop a shared and collaborative approach.

Our psychologists work from the following frameworks:

  • Family therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
  • Social Skills training
  • Positive Behaviour Support
